Furniture from heat treated wood pallets
Reuse, Reduce, Recycle. We have all heard these three words and it
seems that more and more people are actually realizing their true
meaning and the importance of putting them into practice. For some
environmentally conscious individuals “Reuse, Reduce, Recycle” means
passing along children’s clothes to a friend or neighbour, others take
this idea a step further by turning a necessity of today’s modern
society into beautiful, functional and ecological items. Wood pallets
are being used to make everything from vibrant coloured folding chairs1,
houses2, birdhouses, and even guitars. You name it; someone has likely
used a wooden pallet to make it!
Environmentally friendly wooden pallets
Not only have wood shipping pallets always been either repairable or
used to build new wood pallets; today, pallets are becoming even more
environmentally friendly. Requiring very little construction knowledge
or additional materials, wooden shipping pallets can be recycled into
original and creative items. Try doing that with the so-called
environmentally friendly plastic pallets! (Read The greener choice in shipping pallets)
Reuse wood pallets
The reuse program includes all products that can be reclaimed in other
items (e.g.: using parts from one wood pallet to repair another) or
products that can be used to make new objects. Turning wood pallets into
useful, innovative and fun items not only helps the environment, but
allows you to save money while developing your creative side!
Heat treated wood pallets
With the medication recalls in the news this past year due to certain
pharmaceutical products having being shipped on chemically treated wood
pallets, or stored in chemically treated wood crates, it is not
surprising that we highly recommend that you turn towards heat treated
pallets to make your recycled items. (Read Heat treated wood pallets)
Heat treated wood pallets are sterilized by heating the wood shipping
pallet or wood crate at high temperatures in order for the product to
reach a core temperature of at least 56 °C (132.8 °F) for a minimum of
30 minutes. This sterilization method abides by the strictest
cleanliness and sterilization standards which are compulsory in the food
and pharmaceutical industries.
Reuse, Reduce, and Recycle
So, the next time you are considering going to the hardware store to
pick up some wood to build that tree house your kids have been longing
for, be sure to consider using pallet wood for your project. For the
cost of a bucket of nails and a good saw, you will be contributing to
the planet’s reduce, reuse and recycle program in a very tangible manner
and your kids will thank you for it!
